How Whisper Face compares
What is genuinely different, what we have not measured, and what other tools do better.
Most comparison pages are marketing wearing a table. This one tries to be useful instead, which means being clear about three different kinds of statement:
- Architecture — how the software is built. You can verify these by reading the source, and they are the only claims we make with confidence.
- Published positions — what each product says about itself on its own site. Quoted, dated, and linked. Not verified by us.
- Measurements — head-to-head numbers on the same tasks and hardware. We have none yet. See what we have not measured.

The difference that actually matters
Where does your voice go?
Whisper Face runs recognition and cleanup on your Mac. No account, no upload, no word cap. There is no cloud to opt out of, because there is no cloud in the path.
Some alternatives are cloud-first by design. Wispr Flow’s privacy page states that transcription always occurs in the cloud, with zero retention available through Privacy Mode. Others — Superwhisper, MacWhisper, OpenWhispr, Handy — offer local models, cloud models, or both depending on how you configure them.
If your speech contains client names, patient details, unreleased work, or anything else that must not leave your machine, that distinction decides the question before any feature comparison starts.
What we do that we have not found elsewhere
These are architectural, and you can read every one of them in the source. We describe them as unusual rather than unique, because we cannot audit every competitor’s internals.
Cleanup cannot invent meaning. Names, numbers, dates, URLs, paths, identifiers, and commands are treated as protected anchors. The language model that tidies your grammar is only allowed to make edits it can prove — each one has an exact source span, and if the declared edits do not reconstruct the model’s own output, the entire result is discarded and you get the deterministic cleanup instead. Say a phone number, an invoice figure, or a file path, and it survives the polish step by construction.
Insertion is a transaction, not a paste. Your text field is leased when you press the key and revalidated before exactly one paste attempt. If focus or selection moved while you were talking, Whisper Face does not guess — the text goes to a recoverable Voice Outbox instead of into the wrong window. The result is read back to confirm what actually landed.
Corrections have to earn their place. When you fix something Whisper Face typed, that correction is evaluated against a private suite of your own past corrections. It only becomes a rule if it improves the whole suite with zero regressions, it is scoped to the app you were in, and later contradicting evidence demotes it again. Every learned rule is inspectable and can be forgotten.
Uncertain, consequential words can be re-heard. Spans carrying numbers, dates, recipients, or commands can be re-verified by a second, independent, process-isolated recognizer under a hard deadline — and that evidence never silently rewrites your text; it only tells you whether to look.
You can see what it did. The Results view shows how many decisions the compiler made, which anchors it protected, which edits were accepted or rejected, and whether surrounding context influenced the outcome — without storing a transcript dossier.
Talk first, decide later. Flight Recorder keeps a rolling twenty seconds in memory. Say something out loud, then tap the key to keep it. Nothing is written to disk, and it is off until you turn it on.

What other tools do better
Wispr Flow has phones. iPhone and Android apps, today. Whisper Face has no mobile product — it is deliberately deferred until the Mac experience is finished.
Wispr Flow supports far more languages. They publish 100+. Whisper Face ships eleven — English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese — chosen for recognition quality and script coverage rather than breadth. If your language is not on that list, this is not the tool for you yet.
Signed, frictionless installation. Commercial alternatives are signed and notarized, so they open without a warning and keep their permissions across updates. Whisper Face is currently distributed as an unsigned preview: macOS will say it cannot verify the developer, and because ad-hoc signatures change every build, you may need to re-grant microphone and accessibility permission after an update. This is the most annoying thing about using it right now, and it is being worked on.
MacWhisper is stronger for files and meetings. Whisper Face is built for dictating into whatever app you are already in, not for transcribing recorded audio.
Superwhisper gives you more model choices. If picking and tuning models is something you enjoy, it exposes more of that surface.
What we have not measured
We have not run a head-to-head comparison against any of these products. That means we do not claim to be more accurate, faster, or more reliable than any of them, and you should be skeptical of anyone who claims otherwise without showing their protocol.
Specifically unmeasured, cross-product: word error rate, protected-number fidelity, end-to-end latency, insertion reliability across real applications, and clean-machine setup time.
What does exist is a neutral, reproducible six-task protocol —
clean-machine setup, launch readiness, short dictation, protected numbers and
units, one correction, and a two-sentence dictation — with fixed rules for
latency boundaries and error counting. Every product run must record one of
measured, unavailable, or claimed_only, and the evaluator deliberately
emits no ranking or winner. It is published in the repository so that anyone,
including our competitors, can run it and check our work.
Our internal test corpora are synthetic. They are useful for catching regressions and useless as evidence about real-world accuracy, and we do not present them as the latter.
When real measurements exist, they will appear here with the hardware, software versions, and raw observations attached — including the results that do not flatter us.
Checking for yourself
The honest test is your own. Install it, dictate the things you actually dictate — the names you use, the numbers that matter, the app you live in — and see whether the text that appears is text you would have typed.
